How Long is Masking Lasting?

Hello friend!
I wanted to send some updates and clarification on where we are, and where we’re going in regards to masking. I know this is a polarizing and frustrating issue across the board, and I also realize I haven’t communicated well on why and what we’re doing in response.

1. Our Campus
As you know, we meet on the campus of Trinity College. But, the college isn’t the only school on campus. The building we rent is also rented to Genesis Preparatory School. Both schools are private but are continuing to mask all students and staff. They have asked us to continue to wear masks along with them since we are using their campus.
Both schools have asked us to wear masks while inside their campus. We agreed and want to honor that agreement.
Let me just say, I know many churches across the country - and even in our state - who have been booted from schools in which they met and have not been able to return. We are fortunate to be meeting in a school which has allowed us to continue meeting. This is why we continue to respect their request - and will continue to until the end of the school year.
Therefore, barring any catastrophes, we’ll be able to make masks optional beginning in June, when school lets out for both schools.

2. Our Reasoning
Until and possibly beyond June 6th, I will personally continue to wear a mask and you are welcome to as well. Let me tell you why I will continue. In my other work, I work primarily with people who have disabilities. Many of them have compromised immune systems and poor access to health care. I would say many live as “the least of these” in our society.
So, I will likely continue to mask up to care for them. I don’t see this as an act of fear, but an act of love.
I don’t love exercise. I love my kids. I exercise because by taking care of myself I care for them. In the same way, I want to make sure I’m taking precautions for the vulnerable I work with even if it’s uncomfortable for me.
The most frequent command in the Bible is “Do not fear.” These actions are not done out of fear and I don’t believe we should live in fear. However, Jesus did teach that one of the greatest commandments is love. This is a way I can act out of love for those I serve.

3. Our Community
Lastly, let me say that I love you very much. I’m grateful for you. I believe a community that can make it through this season together can make it through anything together.
As we regather and unmask, some will feel more comfortable. Some will feel less comfortable. I would ask that each of us show love and respect for those who may feel differently than you. Just as strongly as you feel about your position, there are people (people Jesus loves) who feel just as strongly about the opposite. And that’s okay. A community should have differing views.
This season, as the ones we’ve already passed, will be temporary. Let’s not let it take our eyes off of the eternal. Let us remain fixed on things of the Kingdom of Heaven, not fixated on the things of earth.

This has been a tough, tiring, and trying season for each of us. Myself included. I’m grateful for your grace, patience, and understanding as we walk through this together. I’m sure I’ll need more. But, I am grateful for you and love you very much. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email me.

Have a great week. I’m looking forward to seeing us all together very soon.

Kevin
